About the Collection

The Pioneers of Diversity: Arkansas Women of Color in Public Health and Medicine is an educational project to increase the visibility and representation of marginalized women in the field of medicine.

It is our goal that people can learn about the diverse backgrounds, experiences, and achievements of women of color in Arkansas and gain a better understanding of their role in the history of Public Health.

We hope that the project encourages those who may feel underrepresented or disadvantaged in the medical field by relating both the challenges and triumphs women of color have encountered pursuing a medical profession.

Included are images, documents and linked videos of successful women who are either native to Arkansas or whose medical careers have significantly impacted communities within the state.

The Historic Research Center celebrates the accomplishments of women of color and seeks to bring awareness of their amazing medical careers to a wider community.

How to get Involved

Thank you for your interest in the Pioneers of Diversity: Arkansas Women of Color in Public Health and Medicine project.

It is the mission of the Historical Research Center to collect, preserve, and provide access to materials related to the history of UAMS and history of the health sciences in Arkansas.

As such, we seek additional materials for its collection as well as artifacts that will help us document and share the State’s rich history as it pertains to medical science.

We support engagement and partnerships with UAMS Campus, Arkansas repositories, and diverse communities.

The Pioneers of Diversity: Arkansas Women of Color in Public Health and Medicine database is an ongoing digital project. If you would like to contribute an image, document or audio/video file, please contact Geoffery Stark at (501) 686-7737 or at glstark@uams.edu.
